Rachel recently shared a blog post with me that contained suggestions for things to share with followers on social media. One idea for a blog topic was to share a story behind an original song. I have never shared anything like that with all of you, so I thought I’d give it a whirl! I hope you will enjoy reading how my first recorded song came to be…

The story behind the title song for our first recording project, ‘The Plan You Have For Me’, is very special to me. From what I gather from conversations with other songwriters, when most song ideas materialize, they are either completed or shelved rather quickly. ‘The Plan You Have For Me’ did not follow such a path to completion…

I had wrestled with the notion that God was calling me to record an individual project for over a year. At the beginning of 2013, the feeling of the call grew stronger, but there were several obstacles in front of me that seemed to be preventing a recording. The two main issues were that I did not have the finances and I did not have any original songs. Then, in February 2013, the following lines were given to me during a particularly sleepless night: ‘The plan You have for me is right where I want to be, so move me, Lord, when I’m standing in the way’. Not only were those lines given to me, but the melody that flows throughout the song was revealed at the same time. Now, I immediately knew that the lines contained a good song idea and were evenly metered for a song lyric. I also knew that the melody was original and had a nice hook. So, I started trying to work on more lines for the song idea. Nothing came. Nada! Zilch!

Over the next few days, I began to realize that the Lord had given me the lines and melody for two purposes. The first purpose was to show me that He could and would deliver the blessings of original songs and melodies in His own time to follow His perfect will. The second purpose was to let me know that He had a plan for me and the recorded project that He had given me a vision for…and that I was standing in the way of His plan with my excuses and lack of faith. It was a revelation that would change my ministry in a dramatic way.

I’m sure that everyone who reads this blog entry is familiar with the path that the Lord led me on for the recording of the project, ‘The Plan You Have for Me’. I won’t draw out the details, but the Lord led me to commit to the project without the necessary financial resources or songs. Over the next several months, He provided the financial resources through friends and family members. He also provided the songs through several members of our worship ministry team at Kennedy Baptist Church. It was amazing to watch how He meticulously delivered everything that we needed for the project at exactly the right time…His time. That leads me to the rest of the story behind ‘The Plan You Have For Me’…

I told you that the lines mentioned above and the main melody was all that the Lord originally gave me to work with. You may expect me to reveal that after I committed to follow His will, He gave me the rest of the song in an amazingly small amount of time…but that is not the way it happened. Not even close! I quickly realized that the main theme of the project was going to be about how we are imperfect, weak beings that God uses for His glory if we choose to follow His perfect plan. All of the original songs that we used on the project fit this theme and contain lyrics that admit our weakness while acknowledging that God saves us for an abundant life and uses us for His glory. We are encouraged through these songs with the truth that God will never leave us nor forsake us! So, as I began to clearly understand the central theme for the project, I knew that the original lyrics that the Lord blessed me with would lead to a ‘Theme Song’ for the project. I began to study and meditate on scriptures that dealt with God’s perfect will and His plan for us. Every week or two, the Lord would reveal another line for the song. Sometimes He would reveal two lines. On one particular night after studying Jeremiah 24:15 in depth, He delivered the entire bridge for the song. Piece by piece, the song began to materialize. On one particular occasion, I reached out to someone whose lyric-writing abilities I highly respect to see if he would alter any of the lyrics for the song. When I was told that he didn’t find any issue with the lyrics, it was confirmed in my heart that the song was delivered to me just as God intended it to be.

‘The Plan You Have For Me’ was completed in August 2013…approximately six-months after God planted the original few lines in my heart! The timing of the completion of the song was very appropriate because it occurred with only a few weeks left before I was scheduled to travel to the studio to record the project. This song, just like the entire project, was perfectly provided by the Lord at just the right time as only He can do. It was humbling to see how He blessed me, my family, and everyone that was involved with the project when we yielded ourselves and followed His will. So remember: if you find the Lord has delivered a vision that contains a specific plan for you, don’t stand in the way. Follow the steps that He sets before you and watch what He will do, for His glory!
